Daily Energy Savings: Cut Your Kilowatts

June 29, 2021

Cutting your kilowatts doesn’t just cut down on your electric bill; it also cuts the amount of greenhouse gas emissions you’re putting into the atmosphere. It is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint and do something good for the environment. The average person consumes about 30% more power than they need in their home. This post will teach you how to cut back on energy consumption and save money!

Tip #1: Clean Air Filter Regularly – This should be no more than two months to not cut off airflow too much with increased pressure from accumulated dirt and dust. It will cut back on allergens too, which means less sneezing and coughing!

Tip #2: Turn Lights Off When Not In Use – Turning a few lights off here and there will cut about 15% of the power needed for lighting throughout the day. Remember, when it gets dark out, we don’t need artificial light anyway.

Tip #3: Unplug Electronics at Night – Cell chargers, video game consoles, computers, and other electronics must be unplugged from the wall if not in use. It will cut back on phantom power drain, usually about 40% of an average person’s energy usage.

Tip #4: Monitor Your Thermostat – It pays off to get a programmable thermostat that can cut your home heating or cooling costs up by as much as 20%. A few adjustments here and there during the year will have a significant impact over time.

Tip #5: Install Motion Sensors – Motion sensors cut power to lights and electronics automatically! It will cut back on the phantom power drain.

Tip #6: Plant Some Trees – If you’re lucky enough to have a yard, be sure to plant some trees in the shadier areas of your house; they’ll help cut down on air conditioning costs during those hot summer months.

Tip #7: Unplug Your Appliances When Not In Use – The National Resources Defense Council estimates that about 17% of homes’ total energy consumption can come from plugged-in appliances and electronics! Disconnecting your devices when they are not in use is an easy way to cut kilowatts.

Tip #8: Replace Light Bulbs with CFLs or LEDs – Replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) or light-emitting diode lights (LED) cut kilowatts. CFLs cut about 75%, and LEDs cut 50%.

Tip #9: Insulate Your Home – Proper insulation will help keep your home cooler in the summertime and warmer in the winter, which saves energy! There is no one-size-fits-all solution for insulating a house; it may require adding or removing materials from different areas of the building to cut back on heat loss during colder months.

Tip #10: Use Fans Wisely – During hot weather, use fans as much as possible to cool down without turning up your air conditioner’s thermostat (or heating system). The fan itself won’t cut any electricity costs–but if you’re using less power overall because of it, that could make a difference when the bill comes.
